Why Do The Clocks Going Forward Feel Like A Fresh Start? A Cheltenham Hypnotherapist Explains
What turning 64, British Summer Time 2026 and the arrival of spring taught me about anxiety, old stories, and how lasting change really happens
This week something interesting happened.
I turned 64.
The clocks went forward.
And spring arrived properly for the first time.
Three things, all in the same week, all saying exactly the same thing.
It is time to move forward.
And it got me thinking about Paul McCartney, who wrote When I'm 64 as a young man.
On the surface it sounds like a sweet, lighthearted song about growing old together.
But listen a little more closely and something else is there underneath.
Fear.
The fear of getting older. The fear of becoming irrelevant. The fear of not being needed or valued anymore.
He was asking someone else to reassure him that he would still be loved and wanted when he got there. To 64.
And this week, I actually got there.
And I want to tell you something.
He was looking at it all wrong.
Because the question was never will you still need me?
The real question, the one that actually changes things, is this:
What do I still want to do?
The Stories the Mind Holds On To
Here is something that comes up again and again in my work as a hypnotherapist in Cheltenham.
The mind is incredibly good at holding on to old stories.
Not dramatic ones necessarily. Not always the big obvious beliefs. Often it is the quieter ones running in the background.
I have always been like this. It is too late to change. This is just who I am now. I am not the kind of person who does that.
These stories often begin early. At a time when the mind was making sense of the world quickly and doing its best to keep us safe.
The unconscious mind learns from experience. And once it decides that a certain story, a certain pattern, a certain way of responding is useful, it holds on.
Not to cause harm.
But because at some point, that story felt like the safest thing to believe.
The problem is that we grow. Life changes. And sometimes the mind keeps playing an old recording long after it has stopped being useful.
A bit like a clock that never got changed.
Still showing the old time.
Still operating on winter settings.
Even though everything around it has moved forward.
When the Clocks Spring Forward, What Are You Ready to Leave Behind?
This weekend the clocks go forward across the UK, marking the start of British Summer Time 2026.
We lose an hour.
And every year people talk about that lost hour as if it is something to mourn.
But here is another way to look at it.
That hour was winter's.
Dark mornings. Heavy skies. The kind of days that make everything feel a little harder and a little slower than it needs to be.
And when the clocks spring forward, we are not losing something.
We are exchanging it.
Trading one dark morning for a longer, lighter evening.
Moving from the old season into the new one.
And that is exactly what letting go of an old story feels like.
It can feel like a loss at first.
That story, however unhelpful, has been familiar. Safe, in its own way. A known quantity.
But what waits on the other side of letting it go is not emptiness.
It is space.
Lighter evenings. More room to breathe. More room to grow.
At 64, having lived through 64 springs and 64 sets of clocks going forward, I can tell you this with absolute certainty.
The hour you give up is always, always worth it.
What Spring Knows That We Sometimes Forget
This week I celebrated my birthday with my daughter. A spa day, afternoon tea, sunshine and spring air in the Cotswolds.
And spring has a funny way of reminding us of something important.
It does not ask permission to clear out the old and make room for the new.
It does not wait for the right moment.
It does not check whether winter is completely finished or whether everything feels ready.
It just begins.
Quietly, gradually, without force.
And birthdays can do the same thing, if we let them. They are a natural pause. A moment to look around and ask:
What am I still carrying that I no longer need?
Not just in the house, though I did sort that drawer this week too.
But in the mind.
Old worries.
Old ideas about what you are capable of.
Old fears about what people think.
Old stories about what you are supposed to look like or feel like at a certain age.
Spring does not look back at winter and wish things had stayed the same.
It just grows.
And so can you.
You Do Not Need a Birthday or a Clock Change To Decide
Here is the part I really want you to hear.
You do not need a birthday.
You do not need the clocks to change.
You do not need a new season, a dramatic turning point, a life crisis or a Monday morning fresh start.
You just need a decision.
And that decision can happen on any ordinary day.
In fact some of the most significant shifts I have witnessed in my clients here in Cheltenham and across Gloucestershire have not come from big dramatic moments.
They have come from a quiet afternoon when someone simply decided that a particular story no longer had to run the show.
You could decide today.
You could pick a date, name it, and make it yours.
Your decision day does not need anyone's permission.
How Hypnotherapy Helps the Mind Let Go of Old Patterns
This is where hypnotherapy becomes genuinely powerful.
Because knowing intellectually that a story is no longer true is often not enough to change how we feel.
We have all had that experience. Knowing something logically, and yet the body still reacts. The anxiety still rises.
The old pattern still shows up.
That is because the story is not stored in the thinking mind.
It is stored much deeper, in the unconscious mind, where logic alone cannot reach it.
Hypnotherapy works at that deeper level.
In a calm, relaxed state the unconscious mind becomes more open to new information, new perspectives, and new experiences of safety.
Old patterns that once felt fixed begin to soften.
The mind starts to update its understanding.
Not through force. Not through willpower.
Just through gentle, lasting change from the inside out.
As Gloucestershire's Most Trusted Hypnotherapist 2025 and Best Hypnotherapy Service of the South West of England 2025, this is the work I do every single day.
And I never stop being moved by what becomes possible when the mind is finally given permission to let go.
Lesley's Logic
This week the clocks went forward.
I turned 64.
And spring arrived.
Three things, all saying the same thing.
Move forward. Let go. Make room for what comes next.
You do not need all three to happen at once.
You just need one quiet decision.
Pick a date. Name it. Make it yours.
And ask yourself:
What old story am I ready to let go of?
It does not have to be big.
It just has to be yours.

FAQs About Hypnotherapy, Old Stories and Lasting Change
What actually is hypnotherapy and how does it work?
Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic approach that uses a deeply relaxed state of focus to communicate with the unconscious mind. In this relaxed state the mind becomes more open to new ideas, new perspectives and positive change. It is not about being made to do anything. You remain in control throughout. It simply allows the deeper part of the mind, the part where habits, patterns and beliefs are stored, to update its understanding.
Can hypnotherapy help with anxiety?
Yes. Anxiety often stems from the unconscious mind responding to old learned patterns rather than actual present danger. Hypnotherapy can help the mind distinguish between the past and the present, calm the nervous system, and build a genuine new experience of safety. Many people in Cheltenham and across Gloucestershire find that anxiety becomes significantly more manageable after just a small number of sessions.
Can hypnotherapy help with weight loss?
Yes. Many people struggle with eating patterns, emotional eating or self sabotage not because of a lack of willpower but because of deeply held beliefs and stories about themselves, food and their body. Hypnotherapy works with those underlying patterns rather than just the surface behaviour, which is why it can be so effective where diets alone have not worked.
Can hypnotherapy help me stop smoking?
Absolutely. Smoking is rarely just a physical habit. It is tied to emotional triggers, stress responses and identity stories like I am a smoker or I need this to cope. Hypnotherapy addresses those deeper connections, making it much easier for the mind to let go of the habit for good.
Can hypnotherapy help with low self esteem and confidence?
Yes. Low self esteem is almost always rooted in old stories about who we are and what we deserve. Hypnotherapy works directly with those stories at an unconscious level, gently replacing them with a more accurate and empowering sense of self.
Can hypnotherapy help with insomnia and sleep problems?
Yes. Sleep problems are often driven by an overactive, anxious mind that has learned to associate bedtime with wakefulness and worry. Hypnotherapy can help the mind and body relearn what it feels like to switch off, relax deeply and sleep naturally.
Do I have to believe in hypnotherapy for it to work?
You do not need to believe in it completely, but a willingness to engage with the process does help. Hypnotherapy is a collaborative experience. The more open and relaxed you are, the more effective it tends to be. Many of my clients arrive skeptical and leave genuinely surprised.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies depending on the individual and what they are working on. Some people notice significant shifts after just one or two sessions. Others benefit from a short course of four to six sessions. During an initial consultation we would discuss what you are hoping to achieve and create a plan that feels right for you.
What does it actually feel like to be hypnotised?
Most people describe it as feeling deeply relaxed, a little like that lovely drowsy state just before you fall asleep, while remaining aware of everything around them. You do not lose consciousness. You do not do anything you would not normally do. You simply feel calm, focused and at ease.
Is hypnotherapy suitable for everyone?
Hypnotherapy is safe and effective for most people. It is not recommended for those with certain conditions such as psychosis or epilepsy, and your therapist will always carry out a thorough consultation beforehand to make sure it is the right approach for you.
I have had therapy before and it did not help. Why would hypnotherapy be different?
That is such a common and understandable concern. Traditional talking therapies are incredibly valuable, but they primarily work with the conscious mind. Hypnotherapy goes deeper, working directly with the unconscious patterns and beliefs that drive behaviour. Many people find that hypnotherapy helps them make breakthroughs that previous therapy could not quite reach.
Where is Phoenix Hypnotherapy based?
Phoenix Hypnotherapy and Trauma Reset are based in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, serving clients across the local area including Gloucester, Cirencester, Tewkesbury, Stroud and the wider Cotswolds. Online sessions are also available for those further afield.
Why do the clocks going forward make people feel unsettled?
The shift to British Summer Time can disrupt sleep patterns and leave people feeling slightly off balance for a few days. This is completely normal. The body clock adjusts gradually, just as the mind adjusts gradually to new patterns and new ways of thinking. Both take a little time, and both are absolutely worth it.
